Sacred Elixir Still in Contention for Classic Start
Top-class colt Sacred Elixir (Pour Moi-Baltika, by Stravinsky) remains in contention for a return to Australia and a third Derby start, reports NZ Racing Desk. Cambridge trainer Tony Pike has successfully campaigned the 3YO in Brisbane and Melbourne and he is now looking at Sydney's blue riband classic – the $2 million Gr1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Royal Randwick on 1 April. The winner of last season's Gr1 JJ Atkins Stakes (1600m) and runner-up in the Gr1 Victoria Derby (2500m) in the spring, Sacred Elixir's effort for fifth in last Saturday's Gr1 New Zealand Derby didn't harm his future travel plans. "He pulled up very well, he's improving and his sectionals were very good," Pike said. "He got back in a slowly run race and he's heading in the right direction." He added: "We'll look at the ATC Derby. We're keeping our options open and whether he runs in the Rosehill Guineas has yet to be decided."
