Heys Disappointed with Spieth Draw
Trainer Bryce Heys has expressed his disappointment at Spieth's barrier for Saturday's Gr1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington but is remaining optimistic about his charge's prospects. The 4YO, who will be ridden for the first time by champion jockey Hugh Bowman, has drawn the inside gate which Heys says does not suit his racing pattern. "If I had the option of choosing a barrier for Spieth, the inside wouldn't be my top choice," Heys told racing.com. "He is a horse that needs room but you never know how the race will unfold, it may work out on Saturday." He added: "Hughie [Bowman] will come up with a plan, he knows how to ride the straight course." Heys is confident that the highly talented chestnut is primed to claim his maiden Gr1 success after narrow defeats in both the Darley Classic and Lightning Stakes at his past two outings. "He is right up to the mark, everything has gone to plan in terms of his preparation for this race. He has come through the first-up run as good as I could have hoped," Heys said. Spieth (Thorn Park-Stella Livia, by Titus Livius) is currently the $3.50 Tab favourite for Saturday's $1.25 million sprint feature.
