Miss Finland Daughter Wins Debut
Earth Angel, a daughter of former champion filly Miss Finland, has emulated her famous mum by winning on debut at Ballart yesterday. Bred and raced by John Messara's Arrowfield Stud, Miss Finland also made her debut at Ballarat before embarking on a glittering career that saw her acclaimed as one of the best fillies of the modern era with 11 wins from 26 starts and over $4.6 million in prize money. Among her wins were five at Gr1 level, namely the Golden Slipper, Thousand Guineas, VRC Oaks, Australian Guineas and Arrowfield Stud Stakes. Miss Finland has had six foals hitherto, with her best performed progeny being Gr1 Thousand Guineas winner Stay With Me (Street Cry). David Hayes, who also guided the career of Miss Finland, said Earth Angel had a bright future. "Miss Finland wasn't any more impressive than that when she won her debut at Ballarat but it is fair to say that Earth Angel isn't as precocious," Hayes told racing.com. "It is hard to compare the two of them and probably isn't fair on either horse." Hayes nominated the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on 8 April as a suitable next target for Earth Angel. "She is still nominated for the Sires Produce and Champagne Stakes but we are of the opinion that she might not be quite ready for Group 1 events at this stage of her career," Hayes said. Owner John Messara said of Earth Angel: "The pressure has been on, we've had an expectation that she was pretty good ever since she was broken in so to see her do that today is fantastic and a huge relief." Yesterday's win earned Earth Angel the distinction of becoming the first worldwide winner for Arrowfield's Kentucky Derby and Dubai World Cup winner Animal Kingdom (Leroidesanimaux-Dalicia, by Acatenango).
