Top Kiwi Mare Spelled

Thursday, 9th March 2017

Top New Zealand sprinter Perfect Fit has been sent to for a spell after failing to recover sufficiently from a setback she suffered in the aftermath of her disappointing 11th place finish in the Gr1 NRM Sprint at Te Rapa, reports theinformant.co.nz. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a mucous build-up in her respiratory passage. It is not the first time that Perfect Fit has been afflicted with the condition – which typically strikes in mid to late summer – except this time her recovery has been slower than anticipated. "We've had to deal with this problem before and we hoped we would be able to work her through it, but it wasn't to be," co-trainer Ken Kelso said. "We've talked it over with her co-owners Ron and Mark Chitty and agreed that the only sensible option is to turn her out." Kelso added: "The plan at this stage is to bring her back and have her ready for the Foxbridge Plate and Makfi Stakes in August." By Elusive City out of the three-time Gr1-winning mare Fayreform, Perfect Fit's biggest win to date was in last year's Gr1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes (1600m) at Te Rapa.
