First Seal Primed for Biggest Test
Randwick horseman John Thompson will attempt to execute arguably the most challenging training feat of his career by preparing First Seal (Fastnet Rock) to win the Gr1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) first-up at Rosehill Gardens tomorrow. The China Horse Club-owned Gr1 winner hasn't raced since finishing 8th in the Gr1 Myer Classic in the spring, and Thompson is aware that the task confronting her on her return is a demanding one. Not only must she contend with a wet track and an absence of more than four months, but she is also burdened with top weight of 58kg for the $600,000 fillies & mares feature. "She was entered in the Guy Walter Saturday week back but the track was a heavy ten, so we elected to scratch her and I'm happy that we did," Thompson told Melbourne's Radio Sport National yesterday. "She is good on slow tracks but when it gets into the heavy range because she's a big heavy mare she just gets bogged down." He added: "It's not ideal but you have to play the hand your'e dealt. But the main thing is the mare is going very well. She has won her last two trials nicely and we are very happy with her." See First Seal's 2014 Flight Stakes win below.
