West Australia Embraces Good Friday
Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) yesterday confirmed that it will conduct a race meeting on Good Friday for the very first time this year. With the support of Western Australian thoroughbred racing industry stakeholders, including its jockeys and trainers associations, RWWA has programmed a meeting for Ascot racecourse on Friday, 14 April beginning at approximately 1.30pm. RWWA cited the fact that other sports such as AFL, rugby league and soccer played matches on Good Friday showed that community attitudes had changed. "The British Horseracing Authority introduced Good Friday thoroughbred racing in 2014 and families responded to its initiative by flocking to Lingfield Park on the outskirts of London in large numbers," said Perth Racing's Managing Director Professor John Yovich. "Perth Racing is happy to facilitate Good Friday racing and will provide free entry to patrons." The Good Friday meeting at Ascot will feature the $200,000 WA Sires' Produce Stakes run at Gr3 level for 2YOs.
