Sydney Preferred Option For Top Mare
Quality Kiwi mare Sofia Rosa (Makfi-Bislieri, by Encosta de Lago) will only run in tomorrow's Gr1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes at Ellerslie by default, reports NZ Racing Desk. All going smoothly, she will instead be in Sydney for the $700,000 Gr1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on Saturday with Blake Shinn booked to handle the Stephen Marsh-trained 4YO. Last year's Australian Oaks winner will be having her third start this campaign following two encouraging performances from a spell. She made late ground for seventh in the Gr1 NRM Sprint, and also found the line strongly for third in the Gr1 Haunui Farm WFA Classic on 25 February. "It's planned to go early on Wednesday morning," said Wairarapa bloodstock agent Bruce Perry, who manages owner Lib Petagna's thoroughbred interests. "The Ranvet has always been a thought and then when Ellerslie was called off we put in an entry." Perry added: "It was always going to be a strong field, but if we're going to capture a Group One at weight-for-age it looks a reasonable opportunity especially if they get a bit of rain." Sofia Rosa's primary autumn target is the $4 million Gr1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on 8 April.
