Volkstok'n'barrell Out of New Zealand Stakes

Thursday, 16th March 2017

Defending champion Volkstok'n'barrell (Tavistock-Volkster, by Volksraad) has been scratched from today's Gr1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2000m) at Ellerslie, reports theinformant.co.nz. The Donna Logan & Chris Gibbs-trained 5YO, who claimed his fourth Gr1 victory in the Herbie Dyke Stakes at Te Rapa last start, is being treated for a hoof issue. He is now likely to be aimed at the winter carnival in Queensland. "He's had a bit of tearing in a laminae wall," said Logan. "It's nothing major, and we thought that when the meeting was rescheduled we'd have enough time to get him right and run him with bar shoes on, but we're still not 100 per cent happy – especially with all the rain they've had." Logan added: "So we've opted to pull the pin and make sure he's completely right, then find a suitable race for him later on when he's 100 per cent. It may well be the winter carnival in Brisbane."
