Chenille Wins Gr1 Auckland Cup

Friday, 17th March 2017

At Ellerslie in New Zealand yesterday, Rich Hill Stud's dual Gr1-winning stallion Pentire (Be My Guest-Gull Nook, by Mill Reef) added a black-type success when 5YO mare Chenille (Pentire-Charmed, by O'Reilly) scored by 0.75 length for trainer Tony Pike as favourite in the $500,000 Gr1 Auckland Cup (3200m) for 3YO+, over 6YO mare El Pistola (El Hermano-Classic Shot, by Zabeel) & 4YO gelding Jacksstar (Zed-Star Guest, by Pentire). A NZ$55,000 purchase by Chris Waller from the draft of Longhands Stud at the 2013 NZB National Yearling Sales Series, Chenille improved her record to 9 wins (including the Listed Hawkes Bay Gold Cup) and 8 placings from 27 starts for NZ$548,375 earnings. Trainer Tony Pike said Chenille was now a chance of crossing the Tasman for the $2 million Gr1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Royal Randwick on 8 April. "She looked a good thing on the turn," said Pike, who prepared Rock Diva to win the Auckland Cup in 2015. "She probably got to the front too soon, but she's a very good staying mare." He added: "She's entered in the Sydney Cup, but whether we head that way or not we'll wait and see."
