Bassett Wins Listed Abell Stakes

Monday, 20th March 2017

At Moonee Valley in Melbourne on Friday night, Waikato Stud's Cox Plate winning sire Savabeel (Zabeel-Savannah Success, by Success Express) added a black-type success when 4YO New Zealand-bred gelding Bassett (Savabeel-Fledgling, by Captain Rio) powered to the line for an authoritative 2.25 length win for trainer Mick Price in the $120,000 Listed Abell Stakes (1200m) for 3YO+, over 6YO gelding Reldas (Testa Rossa-Classic Status, by Marscay) & fellow 4YO gelding Well Sprung (Star Witness-Sprung, by Grand Slam). This was the first stakes victory for Bassett who improved his record to 4 wins and 6 placings (including the Gr3 VRC Carbine Club Stakes & Gr3 MRC Zeditave Stakes) from 17 starts for $309,900 earnings. Bassett, who was a $60,000 purchase by Peter Moody at the 2014 NZ Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Westbury Stud, hails from the family of Gr1 Diamond Stakes winner Fully Fledged, Gr3 winner Cheval Place, and stakes winners Snippet's Girl and Snippet's Show.
