Gingernuts Wins Gr1 Rosehill Guineas

Monday, 20th March 2017

At Rosehill Gardens in Sydney on a heavy track, Haunui Farm shuttler Iffraaj (Zafonic-Pastorale, by Nureyev) celebrated an elite success when New Zealand-bred 3YO gelding Gingernuts (Iffraaj-Double Elle, by Generous) scored by 2.3 lengths for trainers Stephen Autridge & Jamie Richards in the $600,000 Gr1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO colts Inference (So You Think-Pontiana, by Redoute's Choice) & So Si Bon (So You Think-Black Minx, by Lonhro). The Te Akau Racing-owned Gingernuts improved his record to 5 wins (including the Gr1 New Zealand Derby & Gr2 Avondale Guineas) and 1 placing from 8 starts for NZ$984,508 earnings. After initially being sold as a weanling for NZ$5,000 at the 2014 NZB National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Sale, Te Akau purchased Gingernuts for NZ$42,500 as a 2YO at the 2015 NZB Horses In Training Sale. Co-trainer Jamie Richards confirmed that Gingernuts would chase the cross-Tasman Derby double when he makes his next appearance in the Gr1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Royal Randwick on 1 April. "He's going to be awfully hard to beat in a couple of weeks' time," said Richards.
