Happy Clapper Wins Gr3 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap

Monday, 20th March 2017

At Newcastle in the Hunter region of NSW, unbeaten European Champion juvenile & dual Gr1-winning Darley shuttler Teofilo (Galileo-Speirbhean, by Danehill) added a Group success when 6YO gelding Happy Clapper (Teofilo-Busking, by Encosta de Lago) bounded clear for a dominant 3.45 length win for trainer Pat Webster in the $150,000 Gr3 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m) for 3YO+, over 7YO gelding Got Unders (Southern Image-Frantoio, by Danehill) & 7YO mare Kellyville Flyer (Oratorio-Mountain Echo, by Scenic). Happy Clapper improved his record to 7 wins (including the Gr2 ATC Villiers Stakes) and 7 placings (including the Gr1 ATC Doncaster Handicap & Gr1 ATC Queen Elizabeth Stakes) from 23 starts for $1,563,000 earnings. Jockey Blake Shinn said the result was never in doubt. "It was very easy and I'm so delighted to be back on this horse…he rounded them up easily," Shinn told Sky Racing. "Hopefully he can go on to bigger and better things and win a big race." Happy Clapper is expected to have his next start in the $3 million Gr1 Doncaster Mile at Royal Randwick on 1 April.
