Malaguerra Third in Trial

Tuesday, 21st March 2017

Top-class sprinter Malaguerra (Magnus-Tennessee Morn, by Bletchingly) showed he was on track for the Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes in Sydney when third in a barrier trial at Cranbourne yesterday. The dual Gr1 winner was not asked to do much when finishing third behind Spreadeagled and Atmospherical in the 800 metre heat. "He travelled nicely through the trial. There were a couple of sharp horses in the trial and he hit the line pretty well and we're very happy with him," said Manny Gelagotis, racing manager for brother and trainer Peter. "He had a good blow today, he needed that trial, so we'll take him back home and assess him and put the necessary work into him to make sure he's cherry ripe." Malaguerra, a winner of the Gr1 BTC Cup and Gr1 Darley Classic last year, hasn't raced since finishing 6th in the Gr1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on 11 February. The $2.5 million Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) will be run at Royal Randwick on 1 April.
