Gallop to Decide Derby Start

Thursday, 23rd March 2017

Sacred Elixir's chances of competing in Saturday week's $2 million Gr1 Australian Derby at Randwick will be decided this weekend, reports NZ Racing Desk. "He's going to have an exhibition gallop at Tauranga on Saturday and if I am happy with his work then he will fly out to Sydney on Monday," trainer Tony Pike said. Runner-up in the Gr1 Victoria Derby in the spring, Sacred Elixir was a last-start fifth in the Gr1 New Zealand Derby. "His sectionals were fantastic. I knew he wasn't going as well as he was in Brisbane or Melbourne, but in saying that he got back further than I had hoped for," Pike said. Already a Gr1 winner of the JJ Atkins Stakes in Brisbane, Sacred Elixir has the perfect bloodlines to be a classic winner. Bred by Graham De Gruchy, Sacred Elixir is by English Derby winner Pour Moi and is the first foal of the Stravinsky mare Baltika, a granddaughter of De Gruchy's champion New Zealand mare Horlicks.
