Spieth to Bypass Valley

Thursday, 23rd March 2017

Pre-post favourite Spieth (Thorn Park-Stella Livia, by Titus Livius) will not run in Friday night's Gr1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley. Trainer Bryce Heys is cognisant that horses only get limited opportunities to win at the elite level, and he wants to make sure his exciting sprinter is at the top of his game when he races again. "He worked on Tuesday and it was a nice piece of work but I would like to give him another hit-out before we go to the races," Heys told racing.com. "Given we didn't get the result in the Newmarket, I need to make sure he is right up to the mark the next time he competes." Heys said the $2.5 million Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on 1 April was the logical target for the son of Thorn Park, but a Brisbane winter campaign was also a possibility. "The race [TJ Smith Stakes] looks suitable, weight-for-age, 1200m and at Randwick," he said. "But I don't want to race him on heavy ground so we will just see what the weather does."
