TJ Likely For Chautauqua

Friday, 24th March 2017

Five-time Gr1 winner Chautauqua (Encosta de Lago-Lovely Jubly, by Lion Hunter) is likely to bid for his third successive TJ Smith Stakes victory at Randwick on Saturday week. The champion grey sprinter has been stepped up in journey at his past two outings with his most recent performance resulting in a distant third placing (beaten 8 lengths) behind champion mare Winx in the Gr1 George Stakes last weekend. Team Hawkes were considering a tilt at the $3 million Gr1 Doncaster Mile with the mighty grey, but concede he is much better suited back to the sprinting trips. "He ran really good (sic) back there on the inside but she (Winx) was way too good," co-trainer Wayne Hawkes told racing.com. "I'll put my hand up because I was desperate to run him in the George Ryder thinking that he wanted further but he's just not a 1500m horse when it's all said and done." Hawkes added: "He's a sprinter so we'll more than likely keep him fresh and go to the TJ." The $2.5 million Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) will be run at Royal Randwick on 1 April.
