Thunder Snow Wins Gr2 UAE Derby

Monday, 27th March 2017

At Meydan racecourse in Dubai, Darley's Australian three-time Gr1-winning shuttler Helmet (Exceed and Excel-Accessories, by Singspiel) added a group success when 3YO Irish-bred colt Thunder Snow (Helmet-Eastern Joy, by Dubai Destination) scored by a short head for trainer Saeed bin Suroor in the US$2 million Gr2 UAE Derby (9.5 furlongs) for 3YOs, over 3YO Japanese colt Epicaris (Gold Allure-Stapes Mitsuko, by Carnegie) & 3YO US-bred colt Master Plan (Twirling Candy-Sage Mist, by Henny Hughes). Thunder Snow added the UAE Derby to his wins in the Gr1 Criterium International & Gr3 UAE 2000 Guineas. Thunder Snow is the fourth foal to race from the Dubai Destination mare Eastern Joy who has also produced Gr2 winner Ihtimal, Gr3 winner First Victory, and stakes winner Always Smile. This is also the family of Gr1 Prix de Diane winner West Wind and English Oaks & Irish Derby winner Balanchine. Thunder Snow is entered in many of the world’s upcoming feature 3YO races, with trainer Saeed bin Suroor telling Godolphin.com: “I talked to Sheikh Mohammed because Thunder Snow is entered in the Kentucky Derby, the Guineas in England, Ireland and France, and even the Epsom Derby. We will keep the options open and will speak with Sheikh Mohammed again and make a decision soon.”
