First Australian Frankel Set for Debut
Beautifully bred colt Merovee will have the racing world talking when he makes his eagerly awaited debut at Newcastle today. The Chris Waller-trained colt, who is owned by a syndicate managed by Vinery Stud, will become the first progeny of champion Frankel to race in Australia when he steps out in the Variety Children's Charity NSW 2YO Maiden Plate over 1200 metres. Purchased by Chris Waller Racing for $1.6 million at the 2016 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of John Singleton's Strawberry Hill Stud, the northern hemisphere conceived Merovee is the first foal to race from talented filly More Strawberries. Trained by Gai Waterhouse, More Strawberries (More Than Ready-Milva, by Strawberry Road) won 4 of her 19 starts including the Gr2 Furious Stakes & Gr2 Tea Rose Stakes. She was also twice placed at Gr1 level in the Golden Slipper Stakes and Flight Stakes. More Strawberries is a half-sister to Gr1-winning sire All American and hails from the family of dual Gr1-winning US stallion Rock Hard Ten. Trained by the late Sir Henry Cecil, Frankel (Galileo-Kind, by Danehill) was unbeaten in 14 starts, winning ten Gr1 races and finishing his racing career with a phenomenal Timeform Rating of 147 - the highest in history. He stands at Juddmonte's Banstead Manor Stud at Newmarket.
