Tough Draw for Top Matamata Colt

Thursday, 30th March 2017

Summer Passage will have to overcome a wide starting gate if he is to claim consecutive Group One victories in Saturday's ATC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick, reports NZ Racing Desk. The highly regarded 2YO, who was a last start winner of the Gr1 Sistema Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie, has drawn barrier 13 in the capacity 16-horse field. He will be ridden by Hong Kong-based hoop Zac Purton. Summer Passage was accompanied on a Tuesday morning's flight to Sydney by Andrew Scott, who trains the handsomely bred colt with Lance O'Sullivan. By Arrowfield's leading Australian sire Snitzel, Summer Passage is a direct descendant of the good producing Machiavellian mare Subterfuge, making him a close relation to dual Gr1-winning Hong Kong sprinter Scintillation (Danehill), Gr2-winning Australian mare Shania Dane (Danehill), stakes-winning Queensland mare Risk Aversion, English Derby winner Slip Anchor, and talented Gr2 Hobartville Stakes winner Man From Uncle. Summer Passage is rated an $11 chance with Tab for Saturday's Sires Produce Stakes. Golden Slipper runner-up Frolic is favourite at $4.60.
