Abbey Back to Best: Nolen

Tuesday, 4th April 2017

Luke Nolen is confident that richly talented mare Abbey Marie (Redoute's Choice-Catshaan, by Catrail) can return to the winner's circle in Saturday's Gr1 Coolmore Legacy Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick after partnering her to an easy trial win at Cranbourne yesterday. The beautifully bred Abbey Marie - who is a full-sister to Australian Oaks winner Absolutely - marked herself as one of the most exciting horses in the country when claiming her first top-flight victory at just her third career start in the Gr1 Australasian Oaks in May last year. Since then, the 4YO has endured an interrupted career due to injury, including an abscess in her abdomen which forced her to miss the spring. Abbey Marie appeared to be slowly returning to her best when a close-up fourth in the Gr3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) in Melbourne two starts back, before a leg issue saw her finish 16th at her most recent outing in the Gr1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) in Sydney. "She pulled up with an issue after her run in the Coolmore and they just wanted to give her a nice gallop going into the weekend and from my vantage point, I'm very happy with her," Nolen told racing.com. "That's probably as good as she's ever trialled for me - she sort of leaves her best for race day."
