Shorter Trips for Explosive Kawi
Top Kiwi galloper Kawi (Savabeel-Magic Time, by Volksraad) will be restricted to shorter distances for the remainder of his career, reports NZ Racing Desk. Following the 6YOs last-start fifth in the Gr1 New Zealand Strakes (2000m) at Ellerslie, trainer Allan Sharrock has all but dismissed the chances of Savabeel's best son making another appearance over a similar journey. "I doubt he'll ever run over 2000 metres again," Sharrock said. "The ride the other day was good, but he did have that wind operation last year and when the gap came at the 300 he had run out of oxygen." He added: "He's an explosive sprinter-miler so we'll be keeping him to 1200, 1400 and 1600 metre races." Sharrock confirmed the 6-time Gr1 winner was currently enjoying some paddock time before he resumes in the spring. "He's out for six weeks and he'll be back later on and kick off at the Hawke's Bay carnival or in Melbourne," Sharrock said.
