Ribchester & Churchill Set For Sussex Showdown

Wednesday, 2nd August 2017

Tonight’s Gr1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood looks set to provide another exciting chapter in the history of the race with Godolphin’s star miler Ribchester set to clash with dual Guineas’ winner Churchill. Billed as the ‘Duel on the Downs’, the Sussex has provided many high profile clashes in recent years such as Henrythenavigator v Raven's Pass (2008), Rip Van Winkle v Paco Boy (2009), Canford Cliffs v Rip Van Winkle (2010), Frankel v Canford Cliffs (2011), Toronado v Dawn Approach (2013), and Kingman v Toronado (2014). Ribchester, who is coming off successive Gr1 mile victories in the Locking Stakes and Queen Anne Stakes, was narrowly defeated when third in last year’s Sussex Stakes (behind The Gurkha and Galileo Gold), but Richard Fahey is brimming with confidence that the 4YO can make amends in 2017. "Everything has gone according to plan since Royal Ascot, there haven't been any hiccups at all and we have no excuse," Fahey said. “He was very good in the Queen Anne and I hope he'll be just as good.” Fahey added: "This is a big test for him though and I have an awful lot of respect for Churchill. He had excuses for his defeat in the St James's Palace Stakes.” Trainer Aidan O’Brien says he has been happy with Churchill since his unplaced effort in the Gr1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. "He seems to be fine. Nothing came to light and it could have been the heat. That's racing, they don't always perform," he said. "His work has been good. Everything at home has always been good with him. We have been happy since Ascot and we are looking forward to running him again.”
