Stradivarius Wins Gr1 Goodwood Cup
Three-year-old colt Stradivarius (Sea The Stars-Private Life, by Bering) stamped himself as a high class stayer in the making when winning the Gr1 Goodwood Cup (3200m) on day one of the Glorious Goodwood carnival in the UK overnight. The John Gosden-trained colt took full advantage of his 13lb weight advantage to deny Big Orange an unprecedented third consecutive win in the race, sprinting strongly at the end of the two mile feature to defeat the latter by 1.75 lengths, with Desert Skyline in third. Stradivarius will now take aim at next month’s Gr1 St Leger Stakes at Doncaster. "He's a lovely little horse, he won the Vase at Royal Ascot and it was Peter Shoemark, my racing manager at Clarehaven, who mentioned coming here and I thought he was mad, but of course he isn't,” Gosden told Sky Sports. "He'll go for the Leger, obviously. Andrea [jockey Andrea Atzeni] said he's still mentally immature and he's improving all the time. He loves fast ground so it was good he handled this slower ground, but he's got a big heart, which is important." Stradivarius improved his record to 4 wins (including the Gr2 Queen’s Vase) and 1 placing from 7 starts for £399,777 in earnings.
