Gun Runner Wins Gr1 Whitney Stakes

Monday, 7th August 2017

At Saratoga racecourse in the US, top-class 4YO Gun Runner (Candy Ride-Quiet Giant, by Giant's Causeway) made light work of his opposition when cruising to an easy 5.25 length win in the US$1.2 million Gr1 Whitney Stakes (9 furlongs) for 3YO+, defeating Keen Ice (Curlin) & Breaking Lucky (Lookin At Lucky). Gun Runner improved his record to 9 wins (including the Gr1 Stephen Foster Handicap & Gr1 Clark Handicap) and 5 placings (including the Gr1 Dubai World Cup & Gr1 Kentucky Derby) from 16 starts for over US$5.25 million in earnings. Gun Runner's Whitney victory earned him an automatic entry in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar on 4 November, where he is likely to once again meet champion Arrogate. The world's best racehorse has got the better of Gun Runner in their only two clashes to date, in the Gr1 Travers Stakes & Gr1 Dubai World Cup, but the latter's connections are convinced he is now a different horse. "Obviously he's lost to him twice, so a rematch would be great, but I wish we didn't lose to him twice," co-owner Ron Winchell told Blood Horse. "Since the Travers, he's a completely different horse, in my opinion. In Dubai it was a close race but he got one-upped by a fantastic horse in Arrogate, so we're looking forward to trying him again."
