Volpe Veloce Shows Gr1 Credentials
High-class Kiwi mare Volpe Veloce (Foxwedge-Bardego, by Barathea) warmed up for the opening leg of the Hawke's Bay Triple Crown with an effortless first-up win over 1200m at Te Rapa on Saturday, reports NZ Racing Desk. The multiple stakes winner will be chasing her maiden top-flight win in the Gr1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) at Hastings on 2 September. "We're absolutely over the moon," said Graham Richardson, who trains the 4YO with Gavin Parker. "It's a great result and she's on target." Up against the open sprinters, Volpe Veloce jumped smartly to race outside the leader and regular rider Johnathan Parkes allowed her a little more rein to hit the front at the top of the straight. "She was pretty much bolting at the 600 metres and I just had to hold her up. She gave me a super feeling on the turn - she's back big time," said Parkes. The aptly named Volpe Veloce, whose name in Italian translates to "fast fox", has now won eight of her nine starts, including last season's Gr3 Eulogy Stakes, Gr2 Eight Carat Classic & Listed Karaka 3YO Mile. Her only defeat came when she was a gallant fourth in February's Gr2 Sir Tristram Fillies Classic (2000m) at Te Rapa.
