Hawke's Bay 3YO Race Upgraded

Wednesday, 9th August 2017

There will be a black-type race for 3YOs on all three days of the Hawke's Bay carnival after the New Zealand Pattern Committee upgraded the El Roca Trophy (1200m) to Listed status, reports NZ Racing Desk. The El Roca Trophy, which will also receive a prize money boost from $25,000 to $50,000, will continue to be run at set weights with penalties on the opening day of the carnival - Tarzino Trophy Daffodil Raceday at Hastings on 2 September. The Gr3 Hawke's Bay Breeders Gold Trail Stakes will be run on the second day at Hastings, on 23 September, with the Gr2 Sacred Falls Hawke's Bay Guineas a fortnight later. The NZPC justified the review of the race in the following statement. "This race has achieved a Pattern Race Rating using the World Thoroughbred Racehorse Ranking measure of 107.25, with the last three editions being 104, 105.5 and 112.25," the statement read. "While the NZPC was somewhat uncomfortable at the one-off nature of the consideration of this race, which created some concern regarding its full analysis relative to all other races in the NZ Pattern, it was felt that the extremely strong rating merited its upgrade to Listed status from the 2017 running onwards." The statement continued: "The NZPC does wish to make clear that early consideration was given to this race due to the exceptional circumstances of both its extremely strong rating and the close proximity of its running to the scheduled NZPC meeting on 18 August. Early consideration is unlikely to be given to any other race unless similar exceptional circumstances exist."
