Almanzor Returns at Deauville Tonight

Tuesday, 15th August 2017

Champion European colt Almanzor (Wootton Bassett-Darkova, by Maria's Mon) will make his long awaited return to the racetrack in the Gr3 Prix Gontaut-Biron Hong Kong Jockey Club (10 furlongs) at Deauville tonight, reports Racing Post. A three-time Gr1 winner, Almanzor has not been sighted since winning last October’s Gr1 Champion Stakes at Ascot due to a virus that swept through trainer Jean-Claude Rouget's yard in April. Almanzor, who is currently second favourite for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe behind Enable, will be joined at Deauville by stable-mate and fellow French Derby winner Brametot. "It's a good opportunity because Almanzor is getting weight from most of his rivals," said Rouget. "He's taken his work well having galloped with Brametot last week. He's moving better and has got rid of the excess weight. Having missed the first half of the season I hope he can make up for it in the second part.”
