Dilemma for Lankan Rupee Team

Tuesday, 15th August 2017

Trainer Mick Price may be forced to re-evaluate Lankan Rupee’s spring program after it was revealed he is at risk of being balloted out of his primary spring target – the Gr1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on 2 September, reports racing.com. Price was planning on running the 5-time Gr1 winner in Saturday’s Gr3 Spring Stakes at Morphettville, but may have to reroute to the Gr2 PB Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield. That is because the PB Lawrence is the only race that would give him enough prize money to make the Memsie field. "One of my fears has been [the connections of] Lankan Rupee have stated a fair way out that they would be targeting it but because of the fact that he hasn't won since the Lightning Stakes of 2015, he is one horse who is extremely vulnerable at the ballot," Carpenter said. "To ensure form is reasonably relevant and horses are not getting in on prize money earned five years ago, you have to have earned $90,000 in one individual performance over the past two years." Carpenter added: "It’s not onerous, but he simply has not won a race and has not been placed in a major Group 1 race that delivers him $90,000 in prize money in one performance.” The PB Lawrence carries prize money of $120,000 to the winner, whereas the Spring Stakes only $76,800.
