Melbourne Back-Up for Smart Kiwi Mare

Tuesday, 15th August 2017

The connections of smart mare Let Her Rip (Rip Van Winkle-Keeper Special, by Keeper) have devised a Plan-B should their first-up specialist not make the field for New Zealand's opening Group One race of the season, reports NZ Racing Desk. Cambridge trainer Shaune Ritchie is keen to run the Gr3 winner in the Gr1 Tarzino Trophy at Hastings on 2 September but she currently sits on the periphery as 21st in the order of entry. "She is borderline to get in so we're thinking that if she doesn't, and as she is so effective fresh, that we might look at the Let's Elope Stakes at Flemington. It's a Group Two at set weights and penalties and a race we won with Zurella," said Ritchie. "Our first preference though would be to stay closer to home and have a crack at that Group One." Let Her Rip will further her preparation with a gallop between races at Ruakaka tomorrow. The $200,000 Gr2 Let's Elope Stakes (1400m) will be run at Flemington on 16 September.
