Gr1 Test for Ability

Wednesday, 16th August 2017

Trainer Robert Smerdon has confirmed that highly progressive sprinter Ability (Reward For Effort-Paeroa, by Dubai Destination) will have his next start in the $1 million New Zealand Bloodstock Gr1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on 2 September, reports racenet. Ability has proven a revelation in Victoria's sprinting ranks since resuming in early June. The 5YO has won all four starts this preparation culminating in a brilliant win over Lankan Rupee in the Gr3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Sandown ten days ago. However, he is yet race beyond six furlongs, meaning the Memsie will be his biggest test to date. "It's a question mark [the distance]. At this stage, who knows," Smerdon said. "It's worth a million bucks so that's probably where he will go." Smerdon added: "We thought before the Bletchingly that if he fell short, that's fine and there are plenty of other options and we'll just lower our sights and take the same attitude. We'll see how he measures up to the Memsie."
