Hartnell Primed for Return

Wednesday, 16th August 2017

Hartnell rounded out his preparation for Saturday's $200,000 Gr2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) with an impressive gallop at Caulfield yesterday morning, reports Godolphin.com. Assistant trainer David Charles, who heads the Melbourne arm of Godolphin's Australian operation, said the hit-out on the course proper was exactly what trainer James Cummings wanted to see. "James just wanted him to have a look around because he'd not been to Caulfield before," Charles said. "He handled it all without any trouble and his work was first class. He got into a beautiful rhythm and was on the right leg all the way around." Charles added: "We're looking for a nice first-up effort on Saturday, he's ready to run well, but his targets are still a little way down the track." Hartnell, who will be ridden by champion Melbourne jockey Craig Williams, hasn't raced since finishing a distant second to champion mare Winx in the Gr1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes in the autumn. Hartnell, with a rating of 123, is the second-highest ranked Godolphin runner in the IFHA world rankings with only Ribchester (124) above him.
