Barney Roy Eyes Arc Bid

Thursday, 17th August 2017

Richard Hannon has indicated that top-class Godolphin colt Barney Roy (Excelebration-Alina, by Galileo) could run in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe after poor performances this week by fancied French duo Almanzor and Brametot left the race wide open, reports Racing Post. The exception to that, of course, is outstanding filly Enable who maintains a stranglehold on the Arc market at 5-4. Barney Roy, a winner of the Gr1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and runner-up in the English 2,000 Guineas and most recently the Gr1 Coral Eclipse Stakes, will first line up in the Gr1 Juddmonte International on Saturday week before a decision is made about Europe’s championship event. "I was saying to someone this morning how wide open the Arc is looking. Ideally you’d have a look at the Arc and Breeders’ Cup next year, but we’ll take one race at a time. Obviously if he won the Juddmonte there'd be a lot of options,” Hannon told Racing Post. “He’s going to stay in the Arc and we’ll talk to the Godolphin team and see what they think.” Hannon added: “He goes into York in good nick. I think he deserves to be towards the head of the market. We think he’s pretty good and the guys who ride him at home tell me he’s improved. He felt good after Sandown and I have to listen to them."
