Drefong Wins Gr1 Forego Stakes

Monday, 28th August 2017

At Saratoga racecourse in the US, former Arrowfield Stud shuttler Gio Ponti (Tale Of The Cat-Chipeta Springs, by Alydar) celebrated an elite race success when 4YO bay entire and reigning champion US sprinter Drefong (Gio Ponti-Eltimaas, by Ghostzapper) captured the third Gr1 victory of his brilliant career when romping to an emphatic 4 length win in the US$600,000 Gr1 Forego Stakes (7 furlongs) for 3YO+, defeating Awesome Slew & Tom's Ready. "We just saw the real Drefong," Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert told Blood Horse. "He's a great horse and he's always been a champion. I'll probably get him home and maybe run him at Santa Anita. We'll bring him back home and play it by ear." A US$450,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, Drefong improved his record to 6 wins (including the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Sprint & Gr1 King's Bishop Stakes) from 8 starts for US$1,523,385 in earnings.
