Golden Slipper Sibling Strikes on Debut
Marishka, a full-sister to Golden Slipper winner Overreach, signalled a bright future awaits when making a winning debut in the Tab.com.au Handicap (1100m) at Canterbury yesterday. Carrying the orange and brown spotted silks of George Altomonte's Corumbene Stud that Overreach also sported when winning the 2013 edition of the world's richest juvenile race, Marishka (Exceed and Excel out of Bahia, by Snippets) showed signs of greenness before knuckling down strongly in the straight to run down leader Shudabeen to score by a widening 0.4 lengths. Co-trainer Paul Snowden, who prepares the 3YO filly with his father Peter, said Marishka did not make it to the track as a 2YO because she was not as precocious as her celebrated sibling. "It was a very pleasing effort. She's going to gain a lot out of today. There's a fair bit of upside with her," Snowden told Sky racing. "She's still learning how to gather herself up and respond under pressure because what she does at home is pretty effortless." He added: "She's just taken a little bit more time than her siblings. We've been patient with her up until now and we will just sum up where to go from here." Jockey Blake Shinn commented: "She knuckled down really well, the second horse gave her a challenge, but she showed her class. I think she's going to end up in some good races.'' Out of the undefeated Snippets mare Bahia, Marishka and Overreach are also three-quarter blood relations to Gr1 Blue Diamond winner and leading Victorian sire Reward for Effort.
