Lasqueti Spirit Hoping History Repeats
Trainer Lee Curtis is predicting an improved second-up performance from talented mare Lasqueti Spirit (Beneteau-Supriym Story, by General Nediym) on Saturday but doubts she can repeat her heroics from the last time she met champion mare Winx, reports racingnsw.com.au. Despite winning the Gr1 VRC Oaks last spring and placing third in the Gr1 Australian Oaks in the autumn, arguably Lasqueti Spirit's finest moment came when she finished runner-up to the mighty Winx in the Chipping Norton Stakes in February. Lasqueti Spirit will once again come up against the world's best turf horse in Saturday's Gr2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick. "I don't have any aspirations of running second again but I'm happy with how she is going,'' Curtis said. Lasqueti Spirit finished a distant last (beaten 8 lengths) when she resumed in the Listed Rowley Mile at Hawkesbury on 24 August, but Curtis said the run was better than it looked given her lacklustre track work leading into the race. "It wasn't great [the run] but it wasn't bad by the same token," Curtis said. "She hasn't got a great first-up record, it's pretty poor actually, but from that run the work she has done has been really switched on and she's the Lasqueti Spirit of old so we go in a lot happier.'' He added: "We feel that she is very much on track now and her work on Tuesday showed me that.'' Lasqueti Spirit has drawn barrier 7 and is $100 with TAB.
