Trainer James Cummings will aim Monday's Listed VRC St Leger winner Alegron (Teofilo-Alegria, by Medaglia d'Oro) at the Gr1 Melbourne Cup, reports racenet.com.au. "He's got the right attributes to be a very good stayer for us," Cummings said. "We don't tend to nominate many for the Melbourne Cups but he's one horse we will be. As much as he's a big baby, I think he's still enjoying it and he doesn't feel the pressure. He knuckled down and got close to his best and he'll be bang on for the South Australian Derby in a few weeks." The 3YO gelding has now won two of his thirteen starts and nearly $1 million, after also being Group 1-placed in the spring in both the Gr1 Spring Champion Stakes and Gr1 VRC Derby, as well as running third at his second last start in the Gr1 Australian Derby. A homebred for Godolphin, he is the first foal of stakes-placed winner Alegria.
