  • Aromatic Kick Starts Strong Te Akau Weekend

    Monday, 17th April 2023

Ideal placement by record-breaking Te Akau trainer Mark Walker and a perfect ride from Opie Bosson at Awapuni on Friday paved the way for Aromatic to comfortably add further stakes success to her record, reports loveracing.nz. The Matamata trainer sent the 6YO Sacred Falls mare south for the Gr3 Martin Collins NZ Manawatu Breeders’ Stakes (2000m) and in the skilled hands of Bosson the mare proved a class above her rivals. It completed another successful day for the Te Akau stable, who had earlier triumphed with Accidental Tourist in the Murray Free Contracting Ltd/Chris Gommans & Sons Contracting 3YO (1400m), also setting Walker up for another big Saturday where Te Akau Racing’s haul also included the Listed Hawke’s Bay Cup. Originally, a $30,000 weanling consigned by Newgate Consignment at the 2019 Magic Millions National Sale and then a $45,000 juvenile consigned by Kilgravin Lodge at the 2020 NZB Ready to Run Sale of 2YOs, Fierce Flight (Flying Artie) arrived at the last possible moment at Hastings to improve his record to 5 wins and 3 placings from 16 starts. Aromatic, meanwhile, had won the Gr3 Counties Cup (2100m) in the spring and finished runner-up in both the Gr3 Metric Mile (1600m) and the Listed Staphanos Classic (1950m) and was third in the Gr3 Waikato Cup (2400m), making her a valuable breeding proposition when her owners call time on her racing career. Aromatic was purchased out of breeder Milan Park’s draft at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale by Te Akau chief David Ellis for $160,000 and is a daughter of the Gr3 Taranaki Cup (2000m) winner Vickezzchardonnay.
