  • Metropolitan Drought Could Break for Bougoure

    Wednesday, 24th July 2024

Trainer Danny Bougoure aims to end a nearly 12-month metropolitan drought with two starters at Ipswich on Wednesday. Bougoure’s last city win was with Azzareach at Doomben last August. This time, he's counting on Mouette and Jungle Law to break his losing streak. Mouette, ridden by apprentice Tahlia Fenlon, will compete in the Benchmark 70 Handicap over 1100 metres. Jungle Law, with Ron Stewart, will tackle the QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap over 1350 metres. Bougoure, known for training dual Group 1 winner Falvelon, has had limited city opportunities after reducing his stable. “I’ve still got 21 horses in work,” Bougoure said. “I’ve got two good chances at Ipswich, and I think both will be very competitive.” Jungle Law, still a maiden after four placings in five starts, steps up in grade. The daughter of Jungle Cat was a $20,000 yearling buy and recently finished second to Explicable in a 1350-metre maiden race at Ipswich on July 22. Bougoure is adding blinkers to help her focus. “I think she’s a good chance after drawing well, and I’m not worried she’s still a maiden. She’s had a run at Ipswich, which is an advantage, though Matt Dunn’s Golden Decade is the one to beat,” he noted. Regarding Mouette’s (Better Than Ready) fifth-place finish to Liquor in an 1110-metre race at Doomben on July 13, Bougoure said, “Nothing went right for her that day. She had a tough run, sitting three and four wide. She should get a good run this time and be very competitive.”
