  • European Colt Record at Tattersalls October

    Monday, 14th October 2024

Records were shattered at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, particularly on the final day of Book 1, where seven yearlings sold for 1 million guineas or more, bringing the total to sixteen over the three days. A colt by Wootton Bassett, out of Park Bloom, set a European record for a yearling colt, selling for 4.3 million guineas, the highest price for a yearling colt globally in 2024. Consigned by the Burns family's Lodge Park Stud, the colt was secured by Kia Joorabchian's Amo Racing, with MV Magnier from Coolmore as the underbidder. The Burns family is no stranger to such success. Park Bloom's sister, Al Naamah, holds the record for the highest-priced filly, sold for 5 million guineas in 2013. This sale strengthens their legacy, making them holders of the record prices for both yearling colts and fillies at a European auction. Jamie Burns, who led the colt himself, expressed his elation: “He is a beautiful horse... hopefully, he will be the next to enhance the pedigree. I was not expecting that! Emotion took over... it was surreal.” Reflecting on the colt’s behaviour, he added, “He has been busy all week and has never turned a hair once.” Bloodstock agent Alex Elliott, present with Joorabchian, remarked, “If you were going to paint a racehorse, he is as close to perfection as you can get.” Joorabchian emphasised their strategy to secure top stock: “We targeted this sale, and every team member agreed we couldn’t leave without him."
