  • Lady Shenandoah Produces Toorak Thriller

    Monday, 12th October 2026

A daring ride from James McDonald and an irresistible late surge from Lady Shenandoah provided one of the defining moments of Caulfield's spring programme on Saturday when the outstanding Chris Waller-trained mare claimed her fourth elite-level victory in the $1 million Gr1 Toorak Handicap (1600m), overcoming traffic difficulties and a substantial 58kg impost to secure a memorable success. According to inglis.com.au, the daughter of the late champion sire Snitzel appeared destined for another frustrating defeat as McDonald searched desperately for clear running throughout the home straight, only for an opening to materialise near the 100m marker and allow Lady Shenandoah to unleash the acceleration that has established her among Australia's finest mares. The victory was her sixth from a relatively lightly raced career and made her the first mare since the magnificent More Joyous in 2010 to win the prestigious handicap, while lifting her earnings beyond $5 million. Purchased for $525,000 by Hermitage Thoroughbreds in association with Waller and bloodstock agent Guy Mulcaster at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Lady Shenandoah was offered by Arrowfield Stud, which co-bred her with Planette Thoroughbreds. Her triumph represents another outstanding advertisement for the Arrowfield breeding programme, which has produced or been represented by 11 individual Stakes winners during the preceding fortnight, including graduates sold by the operation and progeny of its stallions. Arrowfield chairman John Messara was particularly delighted by the result, acknowledging the remarkable sequence of successes enjoyed by the farm while paying tribute to both the mare and McDonald's extraordinary horsemanship. The performance also carried considerable sentimental significance following the death of Snitzel approximately 16 months earlier, with Messara reflecting on the stallion's exceptional contribution to Arrowfield and the Australian thoroughbred industry. Waller was equally effusive about McDonald's precision under pressure, with the champion jockey saving valuable ground before threading his mount through the narrowest of openings. The result was especially cruel for Welcometotheshow, another Inglis graduate, who appeared capable of producing an upset before eventually finishing third, beaten just 0.4 lengths. For Lady Shenandoah, however, the Toorak success was further confirmation of her exceptional talent, her versatility under demanding handicap conditions and her capacity to produce a decisive finish when the opportunity finally presented itself. It also delivered another major spring achievement for a mare whose breeding, purchase price and racecourse accomplishments have combined to make her one of the most distinguished graduates of the Inglis Easter sale.
